Review of Breathless (2009) by Shane G — 03 Apr 2008
Influential schminfluential. This was boring and irritating. At one point, the woman says something like that she's looked into the man's eyes but could see nothing. That's how I feel about this movie.
Now a film like Funny Games is empty in a weird sense--the two guys torture and kill without explanation and without the director passing judgment. There's a deliberate hole in the story and also in the director's moral universe.
In that movie, it's made interesting. In Breathless, it seemed to that the characters were too cool to care and this extended to the director's moral universe in a similar way. There was an air of posturing throughout.
In Masculin, Feminin, Godard focuses his attention on this attitude (or something like it). In Breathless, he engages in it.
