Review of Breathless (2009) by Tony P — 12 Apr 2008
An exceptionally fun movie, separated from other films by an imaginary wall of coolness. Michel lives life on a whim, pretending he is a womanising machismo so well that it has begun to come true, only fueling his childish behavior.
His lover, Patricia, may be the sexiest woman I've ever seen in film. The enormous scene where they two of them chit-chat around her apartment is so rich and engaging, and noticeably smoother than the rest of the film, allowing the audience to finally relax and enjoy.
The jump cuts and other seemingly amateurish methods of filmmaking bring light and color into the story. The peculiarity of the script is hidden from sight by this insanity. The French new wave is remarkable in that it draws attention to the camera and gives no regard to the audience's sunspension of disbelief.
Only a talented filmmaker can do that. It is quite apparent how the characters, dialogue, and techniques of Goddard have influenced Tarantino and others.
