Review of Breathless (2009) by Edith N — 14 Apr 2008
How very odd. It's a strange sort of film that sacrifices everything: acting, plot, consistency, entertainment, literally everything, for style. It drips style from every single frame. The weird jumpy editing, the over-dramatic soundtrack, the strange, detached acting all give "Breathless" a certain something that no other film I've ever seen has, but at the same time, that's really about all there is to the film.
It's an interesting artistic experiment, I would say, and that's certainly the biggest selling point. Well, that and the fact that Jean Seberg has to be the most charming girl I've ever seen on film.
Creative and influential, with a killer soundtrack backing it up, it's a must-see for film lovers but most people will probably be frustrated by it.
