Review of Breathless (2009) by Keith D — 18 May 2008
MEZMERIZING. One of the very best films I have ever seen. Is the cat chasing the mouse, or is the mouse chasing the cat? That's what you have to figure out in Godard's terrific, noir/thriller/dark-comedy romance.
Not coldly symbolic, but more emotionally buoyant than any other thug on the lam movie you have seen. Yet, it restrains itself from being overly melodramatic, managing to consistently comment about the power struggle between men and women, and the thrill of a romantic chase.
The character of Patricia is expertly played, and it is not until the "breathlless" conclusion that we discover the depth of this seemingly maleable young woman. Michel is a manipulating, calculating young criminal who blows his own cover by falling for the subject of his con.
Patricia at one point comments, " I don't know if I'm free because I'm unhappy, or unhappy because I am free." Freedom, love, and our fugitive nature are combined with a tensely crafted action plot that leaves the viewer.
..breathless.
