Review of Breathless (2009) by Waiyde P — 17 Aug 2008
A distinct change in style from what had come before, this smart film operates on several different levels at once: noir, gangster, art, comedy, anarchistic, nationalistic. Belmondo flippantly saunters through the streets of Paris, doing as he likes all the while.
He's devilish and charming. Seberg, a young American looking for inspiration, goes along for the ride, but her motives and desires are much more tame. Goddard displays two complicated spirits in a post-modern world.
It's not so easy to identify these characters as all one thing or another. Their ugliness is dripping with glamour.
