Review of Breathless (2009) by Gabriel K — 28 Jun 2009
A lot has been thought and said about this film throughout the years. And probably much more will still be said many, many years to come, therefore I will not indulge myself here in too much detail. The film definitely stands out as a milestone in world cinema.
Its experimental tone, bantering mood, constant coquetry of the viewer and finally giving the proof that French culture is quite capable at borrowing from across the ocean - everything falls into place miraculously here.
In the end Godard proves that to make a deeply engaging film on several levels (it will appeal to the Sixties generation, as well as the X-generation and even later ones), the only rule that should count is that you are supposed to break all of the existing ones.
It is sad this seems to be forgotten these days.
