Review of Breathless (2009) by Eric A — 07 Jun 2010
There's a rhythm forced upon the audience in "Breathless," one that allows you to take its title literally. It's life, but only the good parts - or more accurately, the interesting parts.
That alone is catnip to a plot-whore like me. But how inconspicuous its innovation, something I wasn't expecting, given the film's trendsetting reputation. The commentary on genre, philosophy, Hollywood, and the state of Franco-American affairs is presented humanistically, with love, disdain, hate, and humor that's never gross or excessive.
It's quite an artificial world that briefly resembles real life, but sometimes those are the ones that you slip into best.
