Review of Breathless (2009) by James K — 15 Feb 2011
"Breathless" is a great film, primarily because it is a film that feels innovative, even if its innovations are outdated by over 50 years. Godard broke all the rules at the time - using real locations, natural lighting, and the unforgettable jump cuts.
I am now learning that the French New Wave is responsible for the transition between the 40s/50s noir and the 60s, which this film clearly embraces, which cleverly referencing and satirizing noirs. "Breathless" is fun to watch - the dialogue is engaging and the characters are interesting - but it's the style that makes it worth at least one viewing.
