Review of Breathless (2009) by Alexander T — 19 Apr 2011
In my opinion, this is Godard's masterpiece. It's the perfect blend of wit, charm, crime drama and romance in Godard's recognizable and brilliant style. This style hits it's pinnacle in my opinion in Breathless.
Its pacing is amazing making even subtle scenes feel relevant. The way that it illuminates this love affair is fantastic; transforming even a simple look into a relevant plot device. It makes Breathless the intriguing and masterful crime drama it is.
The impact of which cannot be denied. It jump started the French new wave movement, it jump started Seberg and Belmondo's careers, and it broke through too many barriers to count. It's utterly brilliant, and a must see for any cinephile.
Just steer clear of the remake.
