Review of Breathless (2009) by George D — 24 Jan 2013
This is a really cool movie and innovative even by todays standards. It's the kind of film I admire, one full of great dialogue, interesting character moments but also very light on it's feet humorous and real.
I expected this film to be something "important" that I had to watch, the way I felt about The Seventh Seal. Instead I ended up really connecting to the film and feeling invigorated by it. Anyone who has ever been in a relationship can relate to this film, its frank sexual dialogue and content is really refreshing and interesting! The plot involving a criminal on the run takes a back seat to the themes of new sexual freedoms and the relationships women and men have and their respective places in society.
This is a really exciting and fun movie to watch that employes editing and jump cut styling very familiar to fast paced modern film! Techniques and ideas presented in this movie are some that I have never seen.
Mostly the scenes that resonate are the playful sexually charged conversations between Jean-Paul Belamondo and Jean Seaberg (rocking the pixie cut) she is a definiteclassic beauty. Very sexy, cool and fast paced romance carries themes and ideas about sexuality that still ring true today.
