Review of Breathless (1983) by Randy P — 17 Feb 2009
More notable for its influence on the future of cinema than actually being a great movie, but I found it extremely engaging and brilliantly put together. This is the first major use of the "jump cut" which has become a staple of action films and music videos, and it is put to great use here.
The dialogue, even subtitled, is witty and biting, and the characters lovably shallow. The extended verbal foreplay scene in Patricia's apartment might be one of the sexiest scenes I've ever seen.
Jean Seberg is beautiful, and Jean-Paul Belmondo is engaging, and while the plot is secondary, and tends to drag, the whole package is so timeless that it all works. Highest recommendation for film history buffs.
Modern audiences probably wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much.
