Review of Breathless (1983) by Andrea W — 02 Mar 2009
The enduring legacy of this film is a long history of choppy, black and white perfume commercials.
And a questionable position as "requisite" film school viewing.
I understand its importance from both stylistic and technical standpoints, and from each of these I enjoyed this film. Where I could not connect was in the equally important area of story. The characters had their moments (I truly enjoyed the long, naturalistic apartment scene) and at times the script was funny. However, I simply could not bring myself to invest any emotional connection in the characters or take them as relatable archetypes.
