Review of Breaking Upwards (2009) by Tom B — 09 Apr 2010
What works in this $15,000 indie is the the couple's stagnating co-dependency. I've been there, and that aspect of "Breaking Upwards" rings true. And any scene with Julie White jumps off the screen.
What doesn't work is the plot. Fringe characters come and go, adding nothing. Scenes are randomly assembled, preventing each from building off previous ones. The editing is awkward, too, relying too heavily on close-ups, even in moments when characters address a room full of people.
But even those defects can't kill the emotional honesty of the central relationship.
