Review of Breaking the Waves (2014) by Emy L — 31 Dec 2007
"Guaranteed to make grown men cry like babies" said a review on the box. "Yeah, right" I thought, and hired it.
It delivered.
This film (barely) pips Betty Blue as the saddest film of all time. "Romeo & Juliet"? - don't make me laugh...while an unashamed love story it's nevertheless far too gritty, and has far too angry an religion/dogma subtext to qualify as a "chick-flick". Large parts qualify as bona-fide horror.
This film introduced me to both Emily Watson (my candidate for world's best actress) and Stellan Skarsgard, both of whom have gone on to great things.
You need to see this film. But invest in a big bog of tissues first, ya big cry-baby.
