Review of Breaking the Waves (2014) by Derek B — 27 Apr 2008
A deeply religious young woman discovers sex and escapes the disapproval of her tight-knit community by marrying an oil rigger. So far so good. The middle part of the film takes a tragic turn and then the final third of this film - which is very hard to take - goes to somewhere very weird indeed.
The degradation of the "heroine" is very uncomfortable viewing yet seems to make sense to her. For all its faults it is clearly a sincere film and often very moving.
