Review of Breaking the Waves (2014) by Dan K — 23 Mar 2012
Lars von Trier paints an unconventional love tale to suggest something nobody wants to hear: perhaps true love is unconventional. The film is a stunning sample of distaste for religious zealots who operate in groups, and a hint at the director's own religious thoughts.
The ending is certainly of love-it-or-hate-it quality, but the film's closing certainly pleases as a head-scratcher--which seems to be the quality von Trier picks up for the rest of his career.
