Review of Breaking the Waves (1996) by Derek H — 08 Jun 2008
Breaking the Waves just broke my heart (for the second time). An incredibly moving account of religious and romantic devotion, Emily Watson is brilliant as "simple" villager Bess, who is never patronised by von Trier; instead, he encourages us to identify with her increasingly drastic actions in the name of love for God and her husband.
A superficially bleak film that is ultimately mesmerising, heart-breaking and hopeful.
