Review of Breaking In (2018) by Matthew L — 10 May 2018
I will start by saying the nice things I can muster about this movie. Breaking In is a locked-inside thriller that does very little to bring anything new to the genre, but is watchable thanks to some unintentional comedy, mixed with the best acting possible given a propaganda script, which I'll get to. Might I say Gabrielle Union, your star FEMALE mother turned hero, deserves a script that gives her a chance to shine. I capitalize female out of regard for a movie that also capitalizes female at least once every three minutes. See, it's hard to say anything nice about this movie without my mind immediately gravitating toward the heavy handed, poorly delivered message of Breaking In. I will say I was not bored at any point of the movie and the acting is very entertaining (and very not politically correct).
A movie that is trying to say something about the power of a mom, a WOMAN mom, needs to have its own sensitivities in check. You cannot depict your only Hispanic character as every crass, insensitive stereotype of their culture, while trying to decry sexism in America. By all means, preach that women should get all due respect, that's a great message. However, while unnecessarily choosing to be racist In your own attempt to correct, the movie becomes intolerable. I am rambling, but there is simply nothing able to save this movie from a message that would've been served better by just about any other movie I've ever seen. Tarantino could've relayed the message better. Get Gabrielle Union a better script!
