Review of Breaking Away (1979) by Jesse R — 24 Jun 2007

I generally hate sports movies, but this really is a brilliant film. The script is excellent (took home the Oscar in that category, and, let's face it, Best Screenplay is the poor cousin to the Best Picture award).

The characters--central and supporting--are so well written and well acted that you're pinned to the screen (especially Dave, whose early scenes are so painfully awkward to watch, he can't help but be endearing).

If nothing else, the final bicycle race is not to be missed.
