Review of Breaking Away (1979) by Shannon P — 22 Feb 2009
This is one of the few movies that I HAD to own on DVD because it is one of the few movies I can watch again and again. During the VHS days, unfortunately, I did not own it for years because it was $60.
Finally, they came out with a decently priced VHS version, which, of course, I bought. Then, I had to have it on DVD. If you like to laugh, this movie is for you. If you like to see family relationships, this movie is for you.
If you like to see young men transitioning to manhood, this movie is for you. If you like to see the changing nature of small-town America, this movie is for you. If you like to see the little guy triumph despite the odds, this movie is for you.
In other words, this movie is for you. (I will say that my wife says this is a "guy movie," but I think most women will enjoy it.) It won one Academy Award for best screenplay.
