Review of Breaking Away (1979) by Padraig G — 18 Apr 2011
Memorable.
This film is about four friends Dave (Dennis Christopher), Mike (Dennis Quaid), Cyril (Daniel Stern) and Moocher (Jackie Earl Haley). Who have just started their lives after finishing high school with no idea what to do with them.
Overall pretty good movie. The biking sequences are good nothing funky with the music or camera. Manage to stay suspenseful.
The acting was pretty good, nothing amazing but it works in a movie that is not exactly an great acting-needy movie. The casting was pretty good too with a mix between knowns and pretty much except for this and a few others unkowns.
It is pretty good for a coming of age film considering that is not my particular genre (I mix up genres though so I gave this a try).
With the Oscars this is the second best picture nom I saw from the year 1979 the other being the winner, Kramer Vs. Kramer. While this was good and much better than Oscar-winners in the past I would still have to give my vote to Kramer Vs. Kramer.
The ONLY think I can think that was bad with this is that it was pretty predictable, other than that, fantastic.
80% Not quite Kramer Vs. Kramer but still great.
