Review of Breakin' (1984) by Zane T — 15 Jun 2010
Some movies are perfect time capsules for the era in which they were released. This is one of those movies. This takes us back to a time in which it in to wear parachute pants and headbands and woman could have short hair and not be all annorexic to be sexy.
There is a lot of dancing in this movie and a great soundtrack. The plot reminds me of those old Frankie Avalon-Annette Funicello beach movies where there was a girl meeting a man who teaches her how to have fun.
In this case, it's a waitress trying to make it as a professional dancer. She learns some moves by Turbo and Ozone, two street dancers. That's the plot. Very simple. There's the bad guys but they're not really bad, well, except for that dance instructor.
Too bad, the movie ruined it all by making a sequel.
