Review of Breakfast on Pluto (2005) by Stephanie C — 13 Feb 2008
Neil Jordan can take my screen hostage anytime, but this ambitious effort of his is actually somewhat disappointing, and the problem lies with Jordan's direction and narrative design. There's a fascinating story here, crying to be told, and with it are fantastic peformances.
You can catch glimpses of Cillian Murphy's work here, and when it becomes apparent, it's amazing to watch, and establishes him as a worthy leading man. Yet Jordan never really allows Murphy to shine.
He moves the film along at a Coyote/Roadrunner pace, barely stopping to pause, which is disappointing after his slow, sumptuous works like "The Crying Game". I never got to know Patrick "Kitten" Brady that well, nor his friends, and I was bummed.
It sounded like a great film in preproduction, and it certainly had the potential to be one.
