Review of Breakfast on Pluto (2005) by Meeza (Lobsterman) — 17 May 2008
I wanted to be "buttered" up with an intriguing innovative film about the life of a transvestite in Europe. Instead, I got a mundane pansy "pancake" of a film in "Breakfast on Pluto".
Holy Aunt Jemima! Could this film be more dreary? Cillian Murphy stars as Patrick (Patricia) Kitten Braden, an Irish transvestite who goes on a journey to England to find his estranged mother. On his quest, he experiences various audacious episodes including: being a squaw singer in a rock band, becoming a magician's assistant, being investigated for an Irish club bombing, and prostituting for survival.
He does all of this in a very nonchalant fashion without any trepidation. I'll say one thing Kitten is no pussy in that light. This guy or girl, whatever!, had lots of "huevos" in his "Breakfast on Pluto" journeys.
Director Neil Jordan's sadistic film made me resort to the "crying game" when I was confronted with its silly connotations. I do have to commend Murphy for his fearless performance as Kitten.
Cillian continues to bring home the bacon in every thespian effort. I am glad that Jordan decided not to pull another "The Crying Game" exhibition by displaying Murphy's "sausage".
Even though the film has been hailed as a semi-comedy, I did not see the "sunny-side up" in this one. It needed a bit more "juice" by displaying more aspiring segments integrated with Kitten's extravagant challenges a la the witty "Transamerica".
I am sorry Jordan but you did not slam dunk or "milk" it through with "Breakfast On Pluto". ** Needs Improvement.
