Review of Breakfast on Pluto (2005) by Karlyn J — 29 Mar 2009
"Absurdly," "irritatingly," and "unnervingly" are words often placed before "beautiful" when used to describe Cillian Murphy. In Breakfast on Pluto, he claims his striking androgyny and weaves a story that was not quite what I expected. Following one who lives as a deliberately carefree spirit in spite of and because of the onslaught of The Troubles in Northern Ireland, the film shifts between light and intense without much warning. But you watch, and you watch gladly, because Cillian is disarming in any gender and you can't look away. Sometimes you just pause it and stare at the screen. Note: If you have the subtitles on, the birds' chirping is transcribed into actual dialogue. It's trippy; I've never seen a film do this. Note: your mom's a fangirl.
Rating: B+.
