Review of Breakfast on Pluto (2005) by Li C — 20 Apr 2009
There are some major changes in the flim adaptation of Pat McCabe's book...but they're all for the better, imo.
In the book, the main character's name is Pussy and her personality is everything that the name implies. Kitten on the other hand, while equally certain of herself, is a much more approachable character and exudes a sweetness that draws you in. No matter what the world throws at her, she never loses her ability to see the silver lining. The story, while adorably silly at times (the robins spring to mind), gives a believable portrait of a soul searching for love and acceptance, without letting the lack thereof sour all.
Cillian Murphy's performance is outstanding. Watching Kitten, you don't think 'transvestite' or 'transgender', you think 'Kitten'. I don't think there is another actor who could have pulled the character off with quite the same aplomb.
