Review of Breakfast of Champions (1999) by Victor S — 07 May 2006
Vonnegut is not an easy author to put into film, which is probably why we don't see more of his books done as movies. Slaughterhouse Five is probably the best of them, but Breakfast of Champions may be the worst. I read this book over 20 years ago and I really enjoyed it's lunacy, but as a movie it's just disjointed. The writing style of Kurt Vonnegut often makes for difficult reading and does not translate well as a feature film. The performances by Willis, Finney and Nolte are good, but are doomed in this adaptation. It's tedious and I think most will lose interest with this story of one man's middle-age crisis quickly, despite some interesting visuals.
