Review of Breaker Morant (1980) by Christopher S — 19 Mar 2011
Stirring examination of the hypocrisy of military justice. Bruce Beresford's intense story looks at how ordinary soldiers are driven into committing atrocities during the ferocious guerilla conflict in turn-of-the-century South Africa.
The story is concise, with Beresford expertly interweaving the courtroom drama with battle scenes (lacking in heroic derring-do). It could perhaps have been better, but as it is it's an extremely entertaining film.
Edward Woodward and Jack Thompson are both fantastic. A powerful and in someways disturbing film, with the twist that Morant and his men are not completely innocent of their crimes.
