Review of Breach (2007) by James S — 08 Jun 2009
Disappointing and routinely quite dull FBI thriller, Breach is a long way from other FBI-centric movies such as Silence of The Lambs.
Ryan Phillippe is the young hot shot new recruit (does he ever play anything other than a young hot shot something or other?) who is tasked with watching Chris Cooper who has been leaking information to the Russians in a movie based on the biggest security breach in US history.
It sounds quite interesting but the relationship between Phillippe and Cooper is rushed through. One second Cooper despises him, the next he's inviting him to church. A lot is made of the religious angle in the movie which is unusual but fails to make much sense other than as a way for Ryan to get Chris to trust him.
Everyone wanders about with very grave expressions on their faces and the end scene is cringeworthy. It's very difficult to appreciate what was trying to be done with Breach. The story doesn't exact lend itself to high drama and the script is weak which consequently makes the performances so too. There are a couple of good scenes but the rest feels like a very long and hard slog to make it to the unsatisfying finale.
