Review of Breach (2007) by Mike S — 04 Jul 2010
This drama explores the real-life takedown of FBI mole Robert Hanssen, who had been selling American secrets to the Russians for years. Ryan Phillipe is Eric O'Neill, who is assigned as Hanssen's assistant in a new, fake, job.
His sole purpose is to spy on Hanssen and gather evidence against him. Hanssen is supposedly a master lie detector, and O'Neill's challenge is to spin plausible stories for Hanssen that keep him distracted enough that the Bureau can build its case against him.
The tension is palpable as O'Neill and his handlers worry that Hanssen has figured them out. In a well done sub-plot, O'Neill can't tell his wife what's going on or why this creepy Hanssen character has become a family friend.
The acting and the script are excellent, and the glimpses into real-life spycraft are intriguing. Highly recommended.
