Both the main strength and the main weakness for this film is that is that it is based on a true story. 'Breach' does not have as many plot twists and captivating surprises as your typical espionage/spy film does, but this is probably due to the fact that it is based on true events.

This is also what saves the rather linear and predictable plot. There is a certain sense of intrigue in knowing that what you're watching actually happened, and it wasn't very long ago either.

Considering this, the filmmakers could have made a much better film if they had shifted their focus from just showing us what happened to why it happened as well. Chris Cooper gives a typical excellent performance, which is even more remarkable if you consider that the character he is playing is somewhat one-dimensional.

He plays Robert Hanssen, a seemingly extremely loyal and disturbingly religious FBI intelligence agent who ended up being the perpetrator of the largest information breach to the Soviets in the history of the country.

Why would someone like him choose to betray their country in such a way? Sadly this film fails to address this issue in any meaningful way.
