Review of Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017) by Tatsuhito K — 18 Oct 2017
For a film called "Brawl in Cell Block 99", the film spends two-third of its running time on developing characters and setting up this world, which I thought was very refreshing. I also liked the way it played with stereotypes; Vince Vaughn's character could've easily been an archetypal wife-beater who is also a proud racist, but he isn't that guy.
This is a man who treats his wife as his equal partner and when he finds out that she cheated on him, he proceeds to have a quiet conversation/discussion with her, as civilized people do (he also tears her car apart, but he never hurts her physically.
) The action is properly explosive and over the top, and Vaughn gives one of the best performances of his career. Although the film could have been at least 20 minutes shorter and I'm not a fan of the last 2 shots of the film (it left a very sour taste in my mouth), there is definitely more to like than dislike.
It's fun.
