Review of Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017) by Daryl K — 19 Oct 2017
Overwritten and over-long, writer/director S. Craig Zahler's 'Brawl in Cell Block 99' still benefits from its exploitation premise and other elements like cartoonish violence, plus a likable central performance by Vince Vaughn.
For what this is trying to be, the film needed to have the same kind of breezy economy of your average '70s prison flick. Adopting the nihilism and pacing of John Carpenter and the lengthy scene work of Quentin Tarantino only works if your stuff is just as brilliant; 'Brawl' isn't even close, but if you're patient it does have its charms.
