Review of Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017) by John T — 31 Jan 2018
Why do Americans have no sense of irony? In this and his initial, also excellent film Bone Tomahawk, writer/director Zahler explores the limits of masculinity, and beyond. His protagonists are gentlemen who would never compound-fracture the wrong fellow's arm.
They are paragons of stocks and virtue, forced to be violent by circumstances not of their making. And as true gentlemen, they know the art of self defense. Zahn has great fun with Vince Vaughn's character, and even more with the bad guys.
How about that Korean abortionist? Let's hope Little Rocket Man doesn't get around to seeing this, because he lacks a sense of irony, too. Meanwhile the rest of us eagerly await each new scene, wondering which macho fantasy Zahler is going to take on this time.
Who knew Vaughn had this role in him?
