Review of Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017) by Liam H — 23 Oct 2017
I think it's an interesting film. If someone says they think it's the best of the year, I get that. If they say it's pretty bad, I get that too. It's really an eye of the beholder sort of film. It's not out to please everyone, but to those it does please it can do an extremely good job.
Does the atmosphere refresh or annoy? Does the nearly blank slate acting of the protagonist invite the viewer to fill void with their own thoughts or does it alienate them from relating? I think different people will have different answers and experiences.
The Avengers was a crowd pleaser made to maximize the number of people that would give it at least a thumbs up.
BiCB99 was made to greatly please some people with a certain taste, even if that meant leaving many others to not particularly care for it. Thankfully I'm one of the entertained, but this movie will remind me to respect the next niche film that has as great a creative spark, even if I'm not a fan of it personally.
It was made to look cheap, and the contrast can wreak havok on fancy tv settings. I recommend turning off all picture enhancement settings on your tv before viewing.
