Review of Brave (2012) by Eric F — 28 Jun 2014
"Brave" is yet another success for veteran animation studio Pixar, and yet another princess storyline from Disney, but most of the magic comes from what unique qualities it possesses.
This fantasy film stars Merida whose unlike most Disney princesses that came before her, not only is she stronger, more independent, more intelligent, and more ruff-n-tumble than her predecessors, she's also quite an established archer. Merida's quest is unique even when held up to most fairytales: she simply seeks the freedom to make her own decisions and not be held down by her own kingdom's (obviously) primitive social standards, and in that goal she has only one true obstacle -- her mother, who wishes for her betrothal.
"Brave" is a simple but poignant film about female empowerment and the relationships between mothers and their daughters, it's also third wave feminism for children... in short, it's bold, unabashed, brilliant, and well... yes, brave. Great stuff.
