Review of Brave (2012) by David M — 25 Feb 2016
Brave is the 13th film from Pixar, and it stars Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, and Emma Thompson in a story about a princess named Merida, she doesn't like to go by every rule that her mom tells her.
So she goes outside to be herself, that is until she finds a witch, and the witch gave her a spell that actually changed her mom into a bear. Merida doesn't like that spell and so she and her mom have to find a way to undo the spell.
When I first watched this, I was so happy that it did so well after watching Cars 2 which is the worst Pixar film that I've seen. So I watched it again to see if it hold up as much as I thought it did, and it actually did, although I don't think it's at the Pixar level of creativity.
Merida is a good princess, even though she a little similar to other Disney princesses. The story is honestly the weakest part of the film as it was honestly playing it safe, and was borrowing some tropes from other Disney movies.
The animation is gorgeous to look at, especially the hair animation which looks very realistic. It's very funny, and some of the characters are very likable. The daughter/mother relationship is surprisingly refreshing to see that kind of aspect in an animation film, and the bear aspect is actually better handled than Brother Bear.
Pixar's Brave is a nice comeback, even if it wasn't up to the usual Pixar films like Toy Story or Finding Nemo.
