Review of Brainstorm (1983) by Gil P — 05 Dec 2007
This is a film you either get, or it flies by you. Luckily for me, I got it when I first saw it as a child. One of my total guilty pleasures, this film influenced allot of my work. BRAINSTORM is true science fiction.
It asks, if we invent something, how do we deal with it? In this case, its the ability to record human experience, and play it back. A total step in a new frontier. This film follows the team who are able to get the process working, and plays through a number of situations.
Solid, well thought out, and for a film made in the 80's it didn't shy away from what could have happened. Trumbull wanted to have the film shot in SHOWSCAN, which would have made an even bigger impact when audiences were to have experienced playback.
This film is in my top five. James Cameron used it as a bases for writing STRANGE DAYS.
