Review of Brad's Status (2017) by Fred D — 30 Sep 2017
An interesting idea that fails on numerous levels. 80% of the film is Stiller's inner dialogue, which feels like lazy writing. Too difficult to carry the story with good dialogue and character development?
Plus, almost nothing rings true. Stiller, who supposedly spent his life being a good dad rather than pursuing wealth, knows precious little about major events in his son's life, like where he's applying to college and why.
Missed a key interview at Harvard? Stiller's wife gets to play a stereotyped character so annoyingly nice she barely reacts to the news. Likewise, his son barely reacts to the creepy news his dad snuck out in the night to hang with college babes.
Had its moments. Wouldn't ask for my money back, but as we say in my household, "I'd wait for this one to show up on HBO.".
