Review of Boyz n the Hood (1991) by Min R — 08 Aug 2010
"Either they don't know, don't show, or don't care about what's going on in the hood." - Doughboy.
This movie is still one of the greatest american films ever made. After living in Los Angeles for several years, not too far from Crenshaw, I witnessed some things that came straight out of this film. But I think this film brought attention to the senseless violence and made everyone more conscious about what was going on. And in the process, made it better for some people.
Also, I was fortunate enough to play John Madden Football with Morris Chestnut. We were in a Madden League that played every Tuesday at the Denny's on Sunset Blvd around 2000 and 2001.
For some of you madden guys, do you remember the Madden.
Tournament in San Francisco when us LA League guys went up there? One of the things that stands out in my memory is when MoNutt was losing to one of the Bay Area Ballers and their crew in the background was shouting, "No, Ricky, No!" Man, I wish I got that on video. We had MoNutt's back but that sh!t was funny.
If you're reading this and don't know what I'm talking about, here's a brief explanation. In the movie, "Boyz N the Hood," the character played by Morris was named Ricky. He was shot and killed in a very emotional scene as Doughboy played by Ice Cube carried his brother, Ricky home into their house. When their mom saw that Ricky was shot and bleeding, she was overcome with grief, shouting, "No, Ricky, No!" Some of you might find it morbid that I think it's funny but if you ever played Madden, you probably would have laughed too because of all the smack that gets run when you play head to head.
