Review of Boyz n the Hood (1991) by Aaron R — 24 May 2011
An unflinching call for peace from Singleton when he was a director to watch - 20 years on it's still as potent as when it was released. Defiantly brutal in it's dialogue, impassioned and drenched in masculinity and the dereliction of youth - Boyz is a hammerfist and a wake up call to '90's L.
A. Cuba Gooding Jr and Laurence Fishburne shine amidst the hyper-realistic scenarios and whilst it does lend itself to sections of melodrama, the films sense of menace is palpable. Shot on location in South Central L.
A., Crenshaw and Torrance - you're in the war zone and it's a must see.
