Review of BoyTown (2006) by Vivienne D — 18 Aug 2008
God this movie let me down. Big time. It sucks because I really like Bob Franklin and Glenn Robbins, and thought maybe the movie would be good too.
I guess I've been used to watching the good Aussie Movies that have come out lately (like Romulus My Father and even Hey Hey it's Esther Blueburger) but this one was just crap. Crap crap crap crap CRAP.
I don't even know where to begin on this one. First of all everything happens way to easily for them. They just walk into the record studio and go "sign us again!" and the guy's like "Yeah alright.".
The songs sucked. Sure the lyrics were kinda funny - but the melodies were not the least bit catchy. Part of the fun of these kind of movies is the fact that you get hooked on the songs, no matter how average the movie is! Josie and the Pussycats had really catchy original songs, and who doesn't secretly love "Pop goes my Heart" from Music and Lyrics, and "Somebody Kill Me Please" from The Wedding Singer? I couldn't sing along to any of the songs in this film because the tunes were annoying and there was no rhythm whatsoever!
The thing that pissed me off the most (I was going to give this two stars but I had to take a whole star off for this) was the scene when they were in Rio de Janeiro and the bar people were speaking Spanish. Here's a film-making tip for you. If you're going to make a movie and set a scene in another country, DO YOUR GODDAMN RESEARCH. It may have even been acceptable fifty years ago to make that sort of mistake - but GodDAMN - you can easily type Brazil into Google and find out that WOW THEY SPEAK PORTUGUESE.
