Review of Boys Town (1938) by Jennifer K — 22 Sep 2008
I love watching these old movies, they speak a different language! I thought it was funny that Father Flan pushed Whitey around when he was inviting him to Boys Town. And then he let the boys duke it out in the ring.
.. Were criminals so incompetent back then that a priest would just punch someone with a gun pointed at him with a mob of boys standing around? Action sequences in film have come a looong way. So it was funny, but it was also touching.
The poor bastard who died in the beginning to pay his debt to an uncaring society. Little Pee Wee. Tough Whitey, a good boy in the end. And perhaps the most sympathetic character...the reluctant business "partner" of Father F who keeps giving him money!
