Review of Boys Don't Cry (2000) by Kim W — 27 Aug 2012
Its no surprise to see why Hilary Swank won an Oscar for her daring and courageous performance as Brandon Teena in this biopic based on the young transgender male who was brutally murdered by those he thought he could trust.
The first half of the film suffers as a result of a use of fairly boring supporting characters and not enough activity going on in the film to come across as mesmerizing, something that should be required for a film of this caliber.
The second half does pick up some momentum thanks to the intensity and courage of the story that gives a chance to showcase the talents of Swank and even Chloe Sevigny, but ultimately the film does not in a way come across as a wasted opportunity to tell a great story thanks to some average scenarios by the writers, even if the film does benefit from a highly impressive lead performance.
