Good acting but not Oscar-worthy (I thought Swank's role in Freedom Writers was better). The Academy just likes controversial films, which this is. Difficult subject material. Doesn't always go where you think it will go, mostly with the two male lead roles, and probably because most of the movie they're under some type of influence.
Had an NC-17 rating for a while before they toned it down to an R. Like I said, very difficult subject material.
