Review of Boyhood (2014) by James N — 01 Mar 2015
Just watched the DVD of Boyhood. I don't understand the "critical acclaim" this move has received. Yeah filming a movie over a 12 year periods is "interesting" as a technique but I don't see that adding anything to the movie.
Other reviews speak of a richness of character development. Where? All of Mason's Mom's men become alcoholics. Yep, but why? Mason is faced with some life troubles due to a single mother/ repeated step dad families, but no where is there any challenges and decision made that develops Mason as a person.
Mason just seems to change with time and life happening around him. No one seems to be really engaged except for Mom ... but then again the move is not about her else it would be titled Motherhood? What passes as a "story" is the slow burning of time; so 12 years is distilled down to 3 hours of this is what I remember happening.
Why should I care? What was discussed? What is revealed?
