An impressive, yet vastly overrated film, that may just feel like one extremely stretched-out gimmick to some. The method that director Richard Linklater takes is, without a doubt, original and innovative.

But other than watching the cast age, there is nothing unique or particularly compelling about the movie itself. During the entire 12-year span it was filmed, and the 165 minute runtime, he creates nothing to see but a bland look at an average boy, growing up in an upper middle-class family.

It also doesn't help that the boy grows up to be a dull, and rather whiney young man. The adults are much more interesting than the kids, and make the whole thing watchable. Ethan Hawke, in particular, steals every scene that he is in.
