Review of Boyhood (2014) by Matt L — 07 Apr 2015
The filming method is so unique and exciting that I could overlook its flaw. Because the direction focuses on realism over exaggerated drama, the pacing seems to creep along, so you need to be patient in order to appreciate the benefits of the storytelling.
Filmed for several weeks each year for 12 years, the loose script had a central theme and a strong idea for the movie's final scene. Each new year's footage would be dependent on how the previous year's turned out and any input the actors had to share from their personal lives.
There are countless moments where you're left thinking: "how did they get such a natural and loaded reaction from a 7-year old?" As a whole, it is ambitious and detailed, while opening doors for similar production options going forward.
