Review of Boyhood (2014) by Austin G — 09 Aug 2015
Richard Linklater delivers a masterpiece, fruitful to his patient film-making of 12 years.
Since 2002, we've gone through many brilliant movies but since the same year, a week of filming was planned for this masterpiece every year.
With a realistic approach, Richard Linklater's Boyhood grows with the characters portrayed by the same actors for over 12 years. We see both Mason and Ellar Coltrane (the actor who portrayed Mason) growing from the age of six to eighteen. From a boy to a man.
Linklater's Boyhood depicts how every moment in life is present and how every second that passes becomes past. Linklater brings to life, the narrated life of a boy growing into a man.
Every main actor did his/her part in the movie for 12 years and grew with the movie. We had Ellar Coltrane playing the main character of Mason, Patricia Arquette as Mason's mother, Ethan Hawke as the separated father and director's daughter Lorelei Linklater playing Mason's elder sister Samantha who grew from the age of eight to a twenty year old woman.
Boyhood is a movie that fanboys won't find 'entertaining' or 'thrilling' but it's perfect at what it is. I'd say it's one of the best movies ever and obviously my most favourite from the year 2014. It has a short but REAL script and is a fantastic movie with brilliant performances, especially Patricia Arquette who won an Academy Award for her role as the ageing mother and Ethan Hawke as well who was Oscar nominated for playing the father in Boyhood.
A must watch for every serious movie fan who doesn't watch movies only for entertainment but for depth, knowledge of life and an epic experience.
