Review of Boyhood (2014) by Abdulmalik A — 23 Sep 2015
This is a good movie, but not great. The whole scale of it is impressive and I did relate to a bunch of it since I am the same age as the main character and grew up in the same year, which made this kinda nostalgic and special for me, but there are a few problems that prevent this from living up to the hype it had, such as a few eh performances (like Linklater's daughter when she grows up), and an extremely repetitive 2nd half.
I also felt Mason should have had more development, he was really bland, but what made me like the movie was how it was filmed and the parents, both of which were really interesting and played great by Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke.
It was a very good and enjoyable film for me personally, but on an objective level good is where it stops. It's not one of the greatest films ever made like I think it wants to be and has nothing on Linklater's Before Trilogy, but as a film it is good and I would recommend checking it out at least once, especially if you are my age.
